Singapore is getting a library where nobody shushes you and nobody chases overdue fines. The HomePage @ Causeway Point, a joint project between Frasers Centrepoint Trust and the National Library & Archives Board, opens in 2028 on levels 6 and 7 of the Woodlands mall — a 32,000sqft space built around the idea that reading and socialising belong together.
The headline feature for book lovers: pre-loved books you can take home for free, no borrowing process, no due dates. The idea is a pass-it-on system — finish a book, hand it to someone else. The collection will be one of the largest publicly accessible stashes of NLB's pre-loved titles in the country, with books in English and Mother Tongue languages. If you prefer to stay put, food and drinks are allowed inside, so an afternoon of reading over coffee is officially on the cards.
Design-wise, the space nods to local heritage, borrowing visual cues from the colourful HDB blocks of Teck Whye, the old Stamford Road National Library and Singapore's 1970s Brutalist architecture. Sing Lit fans get a dedicated showcase of Singaporean literature and local authors, while an indoor theatre and screening area will run film screenings, author talks, storytelling sessions and cultural programmes. Families are covered too, with children's play zones and interactive experiences planned.
The HomePage is the centrepiece of a wider 2027-2029 revamp of Causeway Point. Once finished, the mall should hold close to 250 stores, plus refreshed dining, retail and upgraded facilities — a solid reason to swing by Woodlands even if you're not a heavy reader.
Why it matters for travellers: it's a genuinely free, all-weather activity in the north of Singapore, close to the Johor Bahru crossing. If you're based in the city centre, pair it with a trip to the Woodlands waterfront or a Malaysian jaunt over the Causeway. And for anyone who loves bookshops, it joins the ranks of Singapore's indie stores as somewhere to while away a few hours without spending a cent. 2028 is a way off, but it's one to bookmark.
