Hong Kong International Airport has quietly become home to what one recent guest ranks above even Qatar's Al Safwa in Doha and Emirates' first-class lounge in Dubai — and that's high praise in the lounge world. The space in question is Cathay Pacific's reopened The Wing First Lounge, and it's turning heads for good reason.
First, the practicalities. Unlike most premium lounges, The Wing First doesn't currently follow the standard Oneworld Emerald entry policy. Right now it's reserved for Cathay Pacific first class passengers and Diamond-tier elites flying Cathay, with Oneworld Emeralds steered to The Pier First Lounge instead. Cathay has said Emeralds will eventually get access, but for now the door is narrow. The entrance sits just past Terminal 1 security, so it's easy to find — and worth arriving early for.
Once inside, the layout covers a lot of ground. You walk straight into the Atrium Bar and its seating area, with a Dining Room serving proper made-to-order food — think dan dan noodles and fresh fruit at breakfast, delivered quickly by attentive staff. There's a tarmac-view sitting room, self-serve buffet and drink stations, and showers. Cathay's exclusive Betsy beer, brewed for its lounges and flights, is on tap, and staff are apparently relaxed enough to send you off with a can or two to take home.
The spa is a genuine differentiator: you can book a 15-minute treatment through the Cathay app up to 48 hours before your flight. The reviewer's neck and shoulder massage got top marks — the only complaint being that a quarter of an hour goes by too fast. You get a buzzer so you can keep enjoying the lounge until your slot.
There's also a hidden zone reserved for first class passengers and invitation-only Diamond Plus members. Guests are asked not to photograph it or talk about it in detail, so it stays something of a mystery — but the reviewer's verdict is clear: if you qualify, spend your time there.
The experience isn't flawless. The lounge fills up noticeably by mid-morning, and the first-class exclusion of Oneworld Emeralds will frustrate frequent flyers who'd normally expect access. Still, the reviewer left convinced it beats the first-class flagships of Qatar and Emirates on the overall experience, even if Al Safwa wins on pure looks.
Who should care? If you're flying Cathay first class out of Hong Kong — one of the more attainable first-class redemptions out there — build in a long pre-flight window. Arrive at dawn when it's empty, eat in the Dining Room, book the spa in advance, and board last.
