Autumn in the Algarve has long been the connoisseur's season — warm days, quieter beaches and restaurant tables you can actually book. Quinta do Lago, the upscale resort in the Ria Formosa area near Faro, has packed its autumn calendar to make the most of it, and the line-up runs from cocktail-fuelled evenings to a lakefront haunted dinner.

The headline event is Quinta do Lago Cocktail Week, running October 24 to 31. Eight days of drinks, dining and entertainment unfold across the resort's restaurants and bars — Dano's, Casa do Lago, KOKO, The Shack, Bovino, Casa Velha, Gigi Bar and Umami — with a different venue to discover each day. Dano's also hosts a Beer Fest during the period, and the resort's Sunday Roast remains a fixture for those after a slower pace.

Cocktail Week collides neatly with Halloween, and the resort leans in hard. The Scary Run kicks things off on October 26, followed by a programme that reads like a family-friendly horror festival: Pirates of the Scareiibean and The Haunted Shack at The Shack, Bovino's Boo Bash Brunch, KOKO's Spooktacular Costume Parade and a Haunted Dinner beside the lake at Casa do Lago. There's Spooky Mini Golf and Zombies on the Loose at Dano's too, while The Magnolia Hotel serves Halloween cocktails from October 30 to November 1. The idea is explicitly multi-generational — costumed kids by day, themed dinners and live entertainment by night.

Once November rolls around, the focus shifts outdoors. The Campus, the resort's sports and wellness hub, keeps cycling, tennis and padel going through the cooler months, and the ninth edition of The Campus Triathlon takes place on November 8, with the Ria Formosa Natural Park as a backdrop. Golf, as ever, is a year-round draw here.

Why it matters: if you've written off the Algarve as a summer-only destination, this is the counter-argument. Late October and November bring reliable mild weather, far fewer crowds and prices noticeably below peak season. Families get a Halloween week that actually caters to children without ignoring adults, while active travellers can tack a triathlon, padel session or rounds of golf onto a short break. Quinta do Lago works well as a base for exploring the Ria Formosa wetlands, with Faro airport under 30 minutes away.
