If you've been flying Delta between New York JFK and Orange County's John Wayne Airport, book accordingly: the airline will drop the route after November 29 and won't bring it back until May 6, 2027, according to Cirium schedule data. American Airlines will keep flying the route daily, giving it a monopoly on nonstop service between the two airports.

The move is a quick reversal. Delta only revived the JFK–SNA link in May this year — its first nonstop on the route in seven years — and ran it daily rather than the six weekly flights it originally planned. The flights will return in spring 2027 with the same numbers and timings: DL403 leaves JFK at 8:00 AM and reaches Orange County just after 11:00 AM, while DL556 is a red-eye departing SNA at 9:15 PM and landing at JFK around 5:00 AM. Delta uses a Boeing 757-200 on the route, one of three SNA routes (with Atlanta and Detroit) flown by the type.

What makes this route worth watching is the onboard product. Delta's 757s in this configuration carry 168 passengers across three cabins, including 16 lie-flat Delta One seats in a 2-2 layout — a genuinely premium way to cross the country without touching LAX. John Wayne Airport is a far calmer alternative to Los Angeles for anyone heading to Newport Beach, Laguna Beach or Disneyland, and it's close enough to Orange County's coastal towns to be the smarter airport if you're not staying in LA itself.

Delta isn't alone in treating SNA as a premium route. American has flown JFK–SNA daily since July 2021 with its three-cabin Airbus A321T, the first regularly scheduled Orange County service with lie-flat business class. United also connects SNA with Newark, though on 737s and MAX 8s with recliner-style domestic first class only. The wrinkle for premium travellers: American is already converting its A321T fleet to a standard single-cabin A321 layout as new A321XLRs arrive — six aircraft are reportedly done, 11 to go — and Flagship First sales end in March. The A321T should stay on JFK–SNA through at least September, but the all-lie-flat transcon experience is clearly winding down.

For travellers, the practical takeaway is simple. Between late November and early May, American is your only nonstop option between the New York area and Orange County, so expect less competition and potentially thinner award availability on a route popular with business flyers. Lie-flat fans have a limited window to sample both products: Delta's 757 flies until November 29, and American's A321T config will disappear sometime around the end of 2027. If you were waiting to burn miles on a transcon Delta One seat, do it before the route goes dark — or plan for spring 2027, when Delta's flights resume on the same schedule.

Simple Flying first reported the pause; Delta had not commented at the time of writing.
