Autumn in California runs from jack-o'-lantern gardens near Los Angeles to grape stomps in Paso Robles and a jazz ballroom on an island offshore. Sunset has rounded up eight fall festivals worth building a trip around, and several have real history behind them.
Closest to LA, Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge runs its Carved event through November 1: hundreds of lit jack-o'-lanterns, glowing installations and giant hand-carved pumpkins set among the trees after dark. It's deliberately enchanting rather than scary — this year adds the US premiere of Finnish artist Alexander Reichstein's illuminated wire sculptures in the garden's labyrinth. Buy tickets ahead; popular dates sell out.
For music fans, the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival closes its run October 15-18 in Avalon, inside the 1929 ballroom of the Catalina Casino. Founder Art Good started the festival in 1987 after wandering into that ballroom, and the lineup for closing weekend includes the David Benoit Trio, Yuko Mabuchi, Vincent Ingala and a David Sanborn tribute. Getting there — a 26-mile ferry crossing — is half the fun, and October on Catalina still feels like summer.
Wine country gets hands-on at Opolo Vineyards in Paso Robles, whose Harvest Festival Dinner & Grape Stomp marks its 25th year on October 16. Guests stomp freshly picked grapes barefoot, then sit down to roast lamb, sarma and Balkan beans, with Balkan folk music and dancing — a nod to the Quinn family's heritage. Friday seating is limited and Saturday is already gone; wear slip-on shoes and take the shuttle.
Up the coast, Half Moon Bay's Art & Pumpkin Festival takes over Main Street October 17-18 in its 54th year, with 275 artists, four stages, a parade, the World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off and free admission. More than 20 local nonprofits sell the food — try the pumpkin smoothie with its self-declared cult following. Locals recommend Sunday if you want lighter crowds.
Farther afield, Quincy's Mountain Harvest Festival hits the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds October 17 from 1-5 p.m., pairing regional beer and wine with fall colour in Plumas County's oak, aspen and dogwood country — plus a kids' zone run by the local community circus. And in La Jolla, Celebrate the Craft on October 18 at The Lodge at Torrey Pines marks 23 years of putting chefs side by side with the farmers, fishermen and brewers behind their ingredients, with ocean views included.
The common thread is that each event doubles as a reason to explore its town — whether that's a coastal pumpkin belt, a Sierra valley or a car-free island. Book anything on Catalina early, check dates before you drive, and pick the festival that matches your mood: family-friendly glow, live jazz, wine-soaked tradition, small-town pumpkin mania or a serious food day out.
