Abu Dhabi has quietly solved one of the small annoyances of arriving by train: how to get from the station to the fun. Passengers stepping off Etihad Rail at the Mohamed bin Zayed City Station can now hop on the free Yas Express shuttle, which runs straight to the island's big attractions.

The shuttle drops passengers at the headline names on Yas Island — Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi. Since the island also packs in hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues, the connection works just as well for a theme-park day trip as it does for travellers settling in for a longer stay.

It's a timely addition given how far Etihad Rail's passenger network has grown. Between Dubai and Abu Dhabi there are five trains a day, with the 1 hour 4 minute trip costing from Dhs39 in Comfort class or Dhs109 in Premium. Fujairah is served once daily from Dubai (1 hour 10 minutes, from Dhs29), while Abu Dhabi to Fujairah runs three times a day at 1 hour 51 minutes, from Dhs55.

There are also three daily trains each between Abu Dhabi and Al Dhaid — the first station in Sharjah (1 hour 24 minutes, from Dhs59) — and between Fujairah and Al Dhaid, which at just 25 minutes and from Dhs19 is the cheapest ride on the network.

For visitors, the practical takeaway is simple: you can now travel Dubai to Abu Dhabi for roughly the price of a coffee, then continue to the theme parks without renting a car or haggling over a taxi. All Etihad Rail tickets are booked through etihadrail.ae. The free shuttle closes the last-mile gap neatly, making a car-free UAE itinerary genuinely workable — especially if Yas Island is your main reason for heading to the capital.
