Mexico just put four pins on one of the most-watched maps in luxury travel. The 2026 edition of The 50 Best Hotels, announced in Paris on September 15, includes four Mexican properties — and they're spread across four different states, from the Yucatán jungle to the tip of Baja California.
The highest-ranked is Chablé Yucatán at No. 9. It sits on a restored henequen hacienda near the village of Chocholá, about 35 kilometres from Mérida, and leans hard into wellness: temazcal sweat-lodge rituals, yoga, meditation and Maya-inspired treatments. It also picked up the Bombay Sapphire Eco Hotel Award 2026, a special commendation for a sustainability model built on Maya agricultural methods, solar power, composting, food-waste reduction and work with local communities.
On the Pacific coast, One&Only Mandarina jumped from 39th to 23rd. The resort occupies a slice of Riviera Nayarit in the municipality of Compostela, where rainforest, mountains and beach meet — deliberately low-density, so the landscape does the talking. It's the biggest climber among the Mexican entries.
At No. 25, Rosewood's Las Ventanas al Paraíso in San José del Cabo remains the benchmark in Los Cabos, pairing Mexican-influenced architecture with a desert-meets-sea setting on the Gulf of California. Think natural materials, pale tones and open spaces that suit the arid peninsula rather than fight it.
Rounding out the list at No. 47 is Maroma, Belmond's boutique-scale property on the Riviera Maya between Cancún and Tulum. Recently renovated with a focus on Mexican artisanship and cuisine, it offers one of the region's best-known beaches plus wellness and water activities — a quieter counterpoint to the mega-resorts further up the coast.
There's a bonus mention for food and drink fans, too: Bekeb, the bar at Live Aqua Hotel San Miguel de Allende, landed on Travel and Leisure's Best 25 Hotel Restaurants in the World, and the same hotel ranked No. 24 among North America's 50 Best Bars for 2026.
Why it matters: these rankings are a reliable shorthand for travellers weighing a splurge. The spread is genuinely useful — jungle wellness near Mérida, barefoot-luxury surf country in Nayarit, desert-ocean drama in Los Cabos and Caribbean beach in Quintana Roo. If a Mexico trip has been on the list, any one of these gives you a distinct version of the country, not just another generic five-star.
