Greece has been named the world's most popular luxury honeymoon destination for 2027 in the latest Virtuoso Luxe Report, knocking Italy off a perch it had held for years. The annual survey draws on the insights of 3,100 travel advisors in more than 50 countries, so it's a solid snapshot of where couples with serious budgets are headed.

Greece didn't just win the honeymoon category. It also ranked fourth among all luxury destinations for 2027, behind Japan, Italy and France and ahead of Spain. Virtuoso's Misty Belles told Euronews that the results point to strong demand for places that mix romance with culture, cuisine and itineraries that go beyond a straightforward beach break.

So why Greece? Advisors cite the food, history and culture, plus the scenery and sheer romantic atmosphere. But there's a shift in where newlyweds are going once they arrive. According to Kayla Zeigler of Destination Europe, couples are increasingly skipping the crowded hotspots in favour of quieter picks such as Paros, Milos and the Athens Riviera. The definition of luxury is changing too: privacy, authenticity and a genuine sense of place now matter as much as beautiful hotels and polished service.

That pattern repeats elsewhere. In Italy, Ischia is muscling in on Capri, while Piedmont and Umbria are gaining ground on Tuscany. In France, travellers are looking past Paris to Provence and the French Riviera.

Timing is shifting as well. With summers getting hotter and busier, couples are opting for honeymoons in April, May, October or even November — fewer crowds, milder weather and more room to actually explore.

The full honeymoon top ten for 2027 reads: Greece, Bali, the Maldives, Italy, French Polynesia, Japan, Fiji, France, Thailand and South Africa.

The broader message from advisors is that luxury today is less about extravagance at every turn and more about choosing where to splurge, booking tailor-made local experiences and favouring smaller-scale hospitality. If you're planning a honeymoon, that's good news: you don't need a superyacht budget to travel the way the affluent do — a well-chosen shoulder-season island, a family-run hotel and a few genuinely local experiences will get you most of the way there.
