A Georgian cottage 38 seconds from the beach, a copper bathtub you could practically float in, and a town full of antique shops and 300-year-old pubs — Deal is having a moment, and Rogue's Cottage might be its best introduction.

The cottage itself is a Grade II Listed building with more than two centuries of history, spread over three wonky floors joined by a helter-skelter staircase. It stretches back further than its frontage suggests: a living room with a hearth, a chic kitchen, a snug dining room with banquette, and a small terrace on the ground floor. Upstairs there's a spacious master bedroom, a twin room under the eaves, and the showstopper — a huge copper tub set against marigold walls and terracotta tiles. Interior designer Ashley Ferry overhauled the place in 2022 with a colourful scheme that mixes Matilda Goad cushions and a Projektityyny bedspread with all the period quirk. The vibe lands somewhere between cool and twee, which is exactly Deal's energy too.

The location does a lot of heavy lifting. Step out the front door, look left, and there's the sea. Deal's high street is packed with independent wine bars and coffee spots, plus antique shops tucked down wiggly lanes beyond the main drag. Highlights include Mileage Vintage, with its well-curated retro stock (think 70s lamps and vintage magazines), Old Coves for refined Danish and Italian design classics, and Hoxton Store for candles and trinkets.

Food and drink are well served. The Rose, a pub with rooms opened in 2018, was designed by Nicola Harding and pairs wood panelling and pistachio banquettes with a menu of local produce and British classics. For something rougher around the edges, The Ship Inn dates to the 1700s — low ceilings, exposed brick, naval badges on the walls, and locals happy to chat. Lore has it the pub sheltered survivors of a major shipwreck in the 1800s. Deal Pier Kitchen, out on the town's Brutalist 1950s pier (the Victorian original was taken out by a ship), is the spot for breakfast.

Why it matters: this is a staycation template for anyone who's exhausted the obvious UK seaside names. Deal is under an hour from London by high-speed train, walkable end to end, and delivers design-forward places to stay and eat without the crowds or prices of Whitstable or the Cornish coast. It suits couples, small groups of friends, or anyone who wants a fire, fish and chips, and a deep bath after a seafront walk.
