A direct air link between the Gulf and Central Asia could be back on the schedule. Kuwait's Jazeera Airways has told Kazakh officials it wants to resume flights between Kuwait City and Almaty, a route it launched in 2021 and later paused because of regional instability.
The signal came out of a meeting in mid-October between Kazakhstan's Ambassador to Kuwait, Yerzhan Yelekeyev, and Jazeera Airways chief executive Barathan Pasupathi. According to Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry, the pair talked through ways to deepen cooperation in civil aviation, tourism and trade. Kazakhstan's side framed the restored route as a triple win: more tourists travelling both ways, stronger business connections, and an easier path for Kazakh exports heading into the Kuwaiti market.
Jazeera Airways, for its part, confirmed it still sees value in the Kazakh market — but with a caveat. The airline says it will weigh a return to Almaty once the regional situation settles and operating conditions are favourable. In other words, there's no launch date yet, and travellers shouldn't start pricing tickets until an announcement is actually made.
Still, the direction of travel is clear. Jazeera Airways is a low-cost carrier that has built its name on affordable Gulf routes, so a relaunch would likely put Almaty within reach of budget travellers who currently have to connect through Dubai, Doha or Istanbul to reach Kazakhstan's biggest city. For Kazakhs heading the other way, a direct hop to Kuwait opens up a compact stopover destination — the Grand Mosque, Souq Al-Mubarakiya and the waterfront towers along the Persian Gulf — plus simple onward connections across the Middle East and South Asia on Jazeera's network.
The timing also fits a broader push. Kazakhstan has been working to raise its tourism profile, banking on destinations like Almaty's mountain-backed cityscape, the Charyn Canyon a few hours' drive east, and the ski terrain around Shymbulak above the city. Direct Gulf flights are a practical piece of that puzzle, bringing in both leisure visitors and the business and diaspora traffic that keeps routes viable between tourist seasons.
For now, this is a story of intent rather than tickets on sale. The airline suspended the route after launching it in 2021, and its return depends on conditions its management isn't ready to sign off on yet. But when a national ambassador and a airline CEO sit down specifically to talk about restoring a route, it usually means the commercial homework is already done — flights like this tend to follow within months of such meetings once the green light comes.
Who should care: anyone plotting a Central Asia trip from the Gulf (or a two-centre holiday combining both), Kuwait-based travellers curious about Kazakhstan's outdoors, and Almaty residents who'd like a low-cost way west. Keep an eye on Jazeera Airways' route announcements over the coming seasons — if and when Almaty reappears in its booking system, early fares on a relaunch route are often the cheapest they'll ever be.
