Cruise passengers sailing through Gran Canaria now have one more reason to linger at the terminal. Las Palmas Cruise Port has opened a new Flemingo Duty Free store, run by JVFA Spain Travel Retail — a joint venture between Flemingo Duty Free and Spanish operator Altimex S.L.

The store slots into the terminal operated by Global Ports Holding (GPH), which runs the port, and marks another move in Flemingo's push to grow its footprint across the Spanish cruise market. It's not an isolated opening either: Flemingo is rolling out retail across GPH's wider Spanish terminal network, which includes Tarragona, Alicante, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

What will actually be on the shelves? The port says the store mixes standard international travel retail categories — think spirits, fragrances, cosmetics and the usual duty free staples — with a selection tailored to the destination itself. Both companies talk up the idea of pairing global brands with products that say something about Gran Canaria, so passengers may find local items alongside the familiar international line-up.

The thinking behind it is straightforward: cruise ports are no longer just somewhere you queue to board. GPH's managing director for the Canary Islands, Susana Gutierrez, framed the store as part of making the terminal "much more than a point of embarkation and disembarkation" — a space that connects travellers to the destination rather than just processing them through it. Flemingo CEO K. Thimmayya echoed that, noting cruise passengers increasingly want something distinctive from the places they visit, not just convenience.

Las Palmas is one of the Atlantic's busiest cruise hubs, serving as a key stop for ships crossing between Europe, the Canary Islands and transatlantic routes, so the terminal sees enormous passenger volumes year-round. For anyone on a Canary Islands itinerary, a duty free option at the port is a practical addition — handy for last-minute gifts, local produce or picking up something you skipped in town before sailing.

If you're cruising into Las Palmas, it's worth knowing the port is genuinely well placed for exploring too. The terminal sits near the capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where you'll find the historic Vegueta quarter, the beach at Las Canteras and plenty of shopping within a short ride. The new store simply means you're not out of luck if you run out of time ashore.
