Mykonos has a global reputation for all-night parties, yet its tiny airport turns out to be one of the more civilised places in the Greek Islands. A recent review of a seasonal Aegean Airlines flight from Mykonos (JMK) to Athens found a compact one-terminal airport that punches well above its size — with a few practical caveats for travellers.

First, the setting. The terminal operates only from May to October, matching the island's tourist season, and its design is genuinely striking: white curved stone walls and geometric cut-outs that echo the Cycladic architecture outside, so the exterior looks like a modern Mykonos village. Inside it's more generic, but well equipped for its size.

The review's flight was an Aegean A320 departing at 2.50pm, and it was delayed — which matters, because Aegean runs tight onward connections through Athens. The writer had just 40 minutes between flights and made it, but the verdict is clear: if you're connecting in Athens on the way to somewhere like Rome, leave at least a couple of hours of buffer.

On the ground, expect queues. Check-in took around 20 minutes on a full flight, though staff were friendly and flagged that bags could be checked through to the final destination. Security was the scrappiest part of the experience — busy, a bit chaotic, and staff who unceremoniously confiscated and emptied water bottles rather than answering questions about them.

Food and shopping are better than you'd guess. Before security there's a Bistro de Cavaleri serving paninis, spanakopita and pizza; airside there's a Pret A Manger with salads and sandwiches, plus the Tashba bar pouring beer, wine, tapas and sushi. Shops include Athens Protasi for statement ceramic bead necklaces, Occhio for sunglasses and JMK Kioski for shot glasses and evil-eye keyrings, with duty-free baklava and kataifi for edible souvenirs.

Seating was findable even at peak times, though UK passport holders face an extra immigration step and a separate waiting area — a post-Brexit quirk worth knowing. The single lounge, Your Mykonian Luxury Lounge, is open to Premium Mastercard holders or anyone booking up to two hours in advance via LoungePass from about US$32.

Overall rating: four stars out of five. The writer's main surprise was the crowd itself — relaxed, sun-bronzed and sober-looking rather than hungover, and nothing like the rowdier vibe she compared to Ibiza. For a small seasonal terminal, it's well facilitated and rarely feels crushed, as long as you go in expecting queues at check-in, brusque security and the possibility of an Aegean delay. Anyone flying out of Mykonos this summer should build generous connection time into their Athens itinerary and consider pre-booking the lounge if they want a guaranteed quiet corner.
