A new ski brand called Rumor went live on October 20 with exactly one product: the Debut 102, an all-mountain ski designed specifically for women — and deliberately not the soft, short ski the industry usually assumes they want.

Founder Anna Dailey's route into skis is unconventional. She grew up racing and coaching on the Palisades Tahoe ski team, ran operations at an audio erotica company for women, and worked as chief of staff at a robotics firm, where she picked up hardgoods and supply-chain experience. Her argument is that women, as consumers, want products actually designed with them in mind — and that ski brands gave up on that, folding women's lines into "unisex" skis in shorter lengths. With Coalition Snow, the other women-focused brand, having folded earlier this year, Rumor may be the only company of its kind left.

The Debut 102 itself is aimed at strong intermediates through freeride competitors (several IFSA athletes tested it in Chile). It's a 102mm-waisted ski with a poplar and ash core, a full sheet of Titanal for stability and damping, a second Titanal layer underfoot for edge grip, and a long 20-meter sidecut radius for a smoother, less "hooky" turn. Lengths run 169, 176, and 183cm — longer than the norm for women's skis, because Dailey believes shops routinely put women on boards that are too short and unstable. A 163 and a 190cm are in the works.

Her design logic leans on biomechanics rather than marketing. Women's larger Q angle (hip-to-knee) makes angulating and initiating turns easier, not harder, so she rejected the shorter sidecuts typical of women's skis. And echoing pioneering designer Jeannie Thoren from the 1980s, she mounts bindings more forward, since a lower center of gravity makes it easier for women to get over the front of the ski.

Notably, this isn't a rebranded existing mold. Dailey developed the ski from the ground up with an engineering team at a European factory, with custom tooling, and funded it herself. Buyers can pick from three topsheet graphics in each length — she thinks women deserve aesthetic options beyond the single look most brands offer. Price is $959 direct from the Rumor website, with free US shipping.

Why does a gear launch matter to travellers? Because the ski you're rented on holiday shapes the whole trip. If you've ever felt bounced around by a too-short, too-soft rental ski, this launch signals that someone is finally taking that complaint seriously — and pushing shops and brands to rethink how they fit women. Expect Debut 102 to show up in demos at North American resorts; if you're a confident skier heading into soft or big-mountain terrain this season, it's one worth clicking into.
