Delta frequent flyers have roughly two months left in 2026 to hit the Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD) thresholds that decide their status for 2027 — and the airline now offers several routes that don't involve flying at all.

Since the start of 2024, Delta has rolled everything into a single metric: MQDs. Miles flown and segment counts no longer matter. The thresholds are fixed dollar amounts per tier, and MQDs can come from paid Delta flights, award redemptions, partner airline tickets, Delta Vacations packages, and spending on Delta's cobranded credit cards.

The biggest win for points collectors: award tickets booked in Main Cabin or higher with Delta SkyMiles now earn MQDs. The maths is simple — miles redeemed divided by 100 equals MQDs earned. The catch is that only awards ticketed directly through Delta channels qualify, even if a partner airline operates the flight. Redeeming Air France-KLM Flying Blue miles on a Delta-operated route, for example, earns nothing toward status. Also note basic economy tickets don't earn MQDs on Delta metal, though Delta's newer 'basic' premium fares do.

Partner fares work differently and can be efficient for a last-minute push: MQDs accrue as a percentage of distance flown rather than ticket price, so long-haul partner tickets in higher fare classes can rack up dollars quickly. Rates vary by carrier and cabin — a full-economy Air France ticket earns on 20% of miles flown, while the same fare on WestJet earns 15%.

On the ground, Delta Vacations packages earn 1 MQD per dollar spent, though Delta's car rental and hotel booking platforms no longer count. Several Delta Amex cards also include 'MQD Headstart' — an automatic 2,500 MQDs each year — plus additional MQDs from card spending. If you're close to a threshold, timing matters: purchases must post to your account in 2026 to count, and a merchant's submitted transaction date (not your purchase date) decides which year they land in. A December 31 charge recorded as January 1 helps nobody in this cycle.

There are also side doors. Delta's status match challenge is back: travellers holding elite status with another airline can request a match and, if approved, get the equivalent Medallion tier for three months plus a challenge to keep it. Platinum and Diamond members can pick Choice Benefits that add 1,000 or 2,000 MQDs respectively — but these take six to eight weeks to post, so selecting now is essential. The deadline for 2026 Choice Benefit selections is January 31, 2027. Higher tiers can also gift status to four friends or family. And for the deep-pocketed, a Wheels Up private jet partnership grants Diamond Medallion at $100,000 in annual spend (or $125,000 without a subscription), though without Choice Benefits.

For anyone who values upgrades, lounge access and priority perks, the practical takeaway is to check your MQD balance now, work out the shortfall, and pick the cheapest route to fill it — often an award booking or a burst of cobranded card spending rather than a traditional mileage run, which no longer works well on Delta's own flights.
