Southwest Airlines is rolling out five new nonstop domestic routes this October, and the list reads like a quick tour of American leisure travel: New England, casino country, wine region, and white-sand beaches.
Three of the new links launch on 1 October. Nashville gains a service to Manchester-Boston Regional in New Hampshire — starting at four flights a week and building to daily — plus a new route to Reno, initially twice weekly and growing to six. Austin picks up a Memphis route the same day, flying six times a week before going daily. That makes Manchester Southwest's fourth year-round destination served from there, while Reno becomes the airport's ninth year-round route and the carrier's farthest-east point in its network.
Two more routes follow from Austin on 3 October, both seasonal. A weekly flight to Sonoma County puts Northern California wine country within nonstop reach of the Texas capital, and another weekly service runs to Destin-Fort Walton Beach on Florida's Emerald Coast through 24 October. Both frequencies are slim — this is a case of try the route while it exists, especially for the beach run.
The expansion fits a busy picture for the low-cost giant. Data from aviation analytics firm Cirium shows Las Vegas and Denver remain Southwest's two busiest airports this month, each handling over 1,750 weekly flights, with Chicago Midway, Baltimore and a rapidly growing Nashville rounding out the top five. Nashville now hosts roughly 1,420 Southwest operations a week, so the city keeps cementing its status as one of the airline's key bases.
For travellers, the practical upside is direct access to places that usually require a connection. Manchester-Boston Regional sits about 50 miles north of Boston, a genuinely useful alternative to Logan. Memphis gains a tenth year-round destination, handy for barbecue pilgrimages and Graceland. Reno works as a base for Lake Tahoe in either direction — ski slopes in winter, lake beaches in summer. Sonoma County's airport is far calmer than San Francisco or Oakland, and Destin-Fort Walton Beach serves one of Florida's prettiest stretches of coastline without the Miami crowds.
Timing matters for the two seasonal routes: if Sonoma or Destin is on your list, book for October before the schedules reset. The year-round routes will only get easier to fly as frequencies ramp up through the season.
