Southwest Airlines is rewriting its loyalty rulebook. Announced on October 15, 2026, the revamped Rapid Rewards program takes effect on January 1, 2027 — and if you fly Southwest even occasionally, the details matter.
The headline change: the Companion Pass, one of the most beloved perks in US travel, becomes far harder to get. The unlimited pass will now only come with the brand-new Platinum status, which requires 140,000 Tier Qualifying Points. Nobody starts 2027 with Platinum — it has to be earned under the new rules. There's a consolation prize, though: hitting 95,000 TQPs or flying 75 qualifying one-way flights unlocks three Companion Pass trips, each covering a round-trip itinerary.
Status names are changing too. A-List becomes Silver and A-List Preferred becomes Gold, with a seamless transition for anyone who earned status in 2026 — no action needed. Silver members actually gain a bit, with their flight-point earning bonus rising from 25% to 40%. Gold members lose ground: the bonus drops from 100% to 60%, although anyone earning A-List Preferred in 2026 keeps the full 100% through the end of 2027. Free checked bags, early boarding and seat selection perks stay intact at comparable tiers.
The bigger squeeze is on how qualifying points are earned. Points from credit card welcome bonuses, bonus categories, referral bonuses and most hotel, airline and shopping partners — many of which used to count toward the Companion Pass — no longer will. Going forward, TQPs come mainly from flying (2 to 10 per dollar depending on fare type) or from 1 TQP per dollar spent on a co-branded credit card. Meanwhile, the pricier fare classes earn fewer redeemable points: Choice Preferred drops from 10 to 8 points per dollar and Choice Extra from 14 to 10. Stack it all up and a Gold member buying Choice Extra fares will earn just 57% of the points per dollar they would have earned under the old system by 2028.
There is one genuine deadline worth flagging. If you apply and get approved for a Southwest co-branded credit card before December 2, 2026, the welcome bonus still counts toward Companion Pass qualification — even if you finish the minimum spend in early 2027. The catch: the pass will only be valid through December 31, 2027, so the old trick of delaying the spend to January for a pass good through 2028 no longer works. Anyone who's had a personal Southwest card bonus in the last 24 months may not even be eligible. If you're already close to the 135,000 qualifying points needed, a single bonus could still get you over the line — but do the maths before rushing.
Bottom line: casual flyers who buy cheaper fares may come out slightly ahead, while credit-card strategists and premium-fare flyers lose the most. If a Companion Pass is on your wishlist, the next few weeks are essentially your last realistic window.
