Ibiza has a new place to stay, and it's hard to top literally: the Parador de Ibiza opened in March inside the former Almudaina Castle, at the highest point of Dalt Vila, the UNESCO-listed old town rising above Ibiza Town. It's the 99th property in Spain's Paradores collection and the first on the island.

If you haven't come across the concept, Paradores are historic buildings — castles, monasteries, fortresses — converted into upscale state-run hotels. The name comes from the Spanish verb "parar," to stay or linger, and this one gives you plenty of reason to. The castle retains traces of the civilisations that shaped the island: Phoenician, Roman, Islamic, medieval and Renaissance. Archaeological remains sit in on-site museum spaces alongside ancient walls, courtyards and bastions, while contemporary art — paintings, photographs and sculpture by well-known artists — threads through the interiors.

The location does a lot of the work. The hotel overlooks Ibiza's harbour and the Mediterranean, yet the city centre and main port are close by, so you're minutes from restaurants, nightlife and ferry connections once you've had your fill of fortress views.

Much of the early buzz has come from the meetings side: the property is pitching itself as an alternative to the standard hotel ballroom for executive retreats, incentives and small to mid-sized gatherings. The pitch is that the destination becomes part of the meeting rather than a backdrop — history on the walls, sea outside the window, and the old town on the doorstep for off-site cultural programming.

Leisure travellers should pay attention too. Getting there from the US is about to get much simpler: United Airlines is launching non-stop flights between Newark and Ibiza in May 2027. Until then, most visitors route through Madrid, Barcelona or a major European hub, or hop a ferry from the Spanish mainland.

Paradores are popular for good reason — you sleep inside a monument without paying boutique-hotel-monument prices — and with only a limited number of rooms in a castle, this one will likely book up fast in summer. If Ibiza proper feels too hectic, the formula works elsewhere too: the network's other 98 properties span the country, from Galician monasteries to Andalusian fortresses, so you can collect them like stamps.
