The Maldives has a new answer to the beach club, and it flips the usual formula on its head. SunRay Social & Swim Club has just opened at SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton, from S Hotels & Resorts — and instead of the DJ-till-dawn party model, it is built entirely around daylight. The concept debuted at SAii Koh Samui Villas earlier this year and will roll out across the group's portfolio, wrapping up at SAii Laguna Phuket later this year.
The day at SunRay is split into four phases. First Light kicks off with sunrise yoga or a beach bootcamp. Morning Drift is for the water — Aqua Flow workouts, floating pickleball (yes, really), plus snorkelling and diving in the lagoon. Peak Sun dials up the energy with water polo, pool volleyball and mobile karaoke, with water painting kits for anyone wanting a quieter moment. Golden Hour brings padel clinics, beach volleyball, table tennis, kickbox fitness and family sandcastle competitions.
Culture and food carry the local flavour. A Boduberu sunset ritual brings traditional Maldivian drumming to the shore, and after dark there's a rotating line-up of live bands, acoustic sessions and DJ nights. The menu mixes Thai, Maldivian and international influences — think breadfruit crisps with Maldivian tuna, crispy tortilla with beef kaprao, Phuket lobster arancini and Maldivian-style pizza — plus three gelato flavours matched to the brand's colour palette: Orange Amaretto, Toffee and Pink Guava.
The practical bit for travellers: SunRay sits within CROSSROADS Maldives, a multi-resort complex with a 30-berth marina and a stack of dining venues, just 15 minutes by speedboat from Malé's international airport. Crucially, you don't need to stay at the resort. Day passes start at USD 30 net per adult and include 30% off food and drink; meal packages run from USD 75 and all-inclusive options from USD 140. Kids aged seven and under go free, and every package covers round-trip speedboat transfers.
Why it matters: day passes are one of the best-value ways to taste Maldives luxury without committing to a resort's nightly rate, and an evening here pairs naturally with a stay on Malé or Hulhumalé. It also suits families — the programme is pitched at couples, groups and kids alike, a shift from the adults-only party-club norm.
