Christmas on a Maldivian island usually means sunsets and seafood. At The Standard, Maldives, this year it also means stilt walkers, bubble shows and a full candy-land theme. The resort on Huruvalhi island has unveiled 'The Festive Isle', a sweets-inspired programme running from 20 December 2026 to 7 January 2027 — more than two weeks of events built around what it calls playful, nostalgic holiday magic.
Things kick off on 20 December with a Christmas tree lighting ceremony, live entertainment and family activities. The programme then leans heavily on food and beach parties: a Not Your Standard Pool Party, a Maldivian BBQ experience, seafood showcases, wine and whisky events and festive brunches run throughout the stay.
Christmas Eve is the busiest night of the calendar. It starts with a sunset beach gathering complete with cocktails, DJs, bubble shows and face painting, then splits into four dinner options — traditional Maldivian flavours at Guduguda, open-flame cooking at BBQ Shak, a Mediterranean sharing feast at Onda, or a surf-and-turf menu — before finishing with the X'mas Eve Toast, a beach party with LED performers and fire shows. On Christmas Day, Santa arrives by boat rather than sleigh for 'Santa's Island Arrival', followed by the Sunny Huruvalhi Brunch, an elegant Land & Sea beachfront dinner, and traditional Boduberu drumming after dark.
New Year's Eve carries the candy theme through to midnight. Diners pick between three themed feasts, including a five-course open-fire menu at BBQ Shak, plus a 'Candy Land Culinary Journey' of interactive food experiences. The Countdown Party brings DJs, LED entertainment, fire shows and fireworks over the Indian Ocean, with Thailand-based DJ Kessaé Kimmi playing through to sunrise.
The food programme runs deep: wine-pairing dinners, a Fresh Catch experience, and specialty nights built around lobster, crab, oysters and foie gras, curated by culinary director Nandakumar Dharuman. General manager Justin Swart has billed the whole thing as 'anything but standard' — and the resort backs it up with its usual extras, from snorkelling and diving to wellness treatments at The Standard Spa.
Worth knowing if you're eyeing the Maldives this December: The Ritz-Carlton Maldives at Fari Islands is also leaning festive, hosting a four-month art residency by French artist Alexandre Benjamin Navet in partnership with Champagne house Ruinart. He'll redesign the Beach Shack restaurant and the resort's Christmas tree, with Ruinart pairing dinners and workshops from 18 December. Meanwhile, Niva Kuramathi is running a family-friendly Halloween week from 26 October to 1 November, complete with pumpkin races, potion classes and a trick-or-treat pool party.
The practical bit: festive dining and events at The Standard require reservations, and the resort recommends booking well ahead — details via mv.reservations@standardhotels.com. If you want a Christmas with fire dancers instead of jumpers, this is one of the more ambitious programmes in the country this season.
