United Airlines flies more than 630 Boeing 737s, so it's a bit awkward that the aircraft earning its highest customer satisfaction scores is an Airbus A321neo. The airline's chief global operations officer, Toby Enqvist, has singled out the type as United's top scorer for customer service satisfaction - despite the neo making up just 77 of the carrier's narrowbody fleet.
What makes this interesting is that the A321neo isn't a spacious premium product. United squeezes 200 seats on board - 20 first, 57 Economy Plus, 123 standard economy - which is denser than Delta's 194-seat or American's 196-seat versions of the same aircraft. Passengers clearly aren't marking it down for that.
The explanation seems to lie in the small stuff. There's a large seatback screen at every seat with a deep content library, so you don't have to prop up your phone. There's WiFi, increasingly delivered via Starlink satellite internet - United had fitted it to 450 mainline and regional aircraft by mid-2026 and says satisfaction scores on Starlink flights are twice as high as on the rest of the fleet. And at the back of the cabin there's a self-service snack bar, so you can grab a refill without waiting for the trolley. None of these features is remarkable alone; together they add up to a flight that just feels easier.
There's a fleet-strategy subplot too. United ordered the MAX 10 to add capacity within its Boeing fleet, but certification delays dragged on, and a previously undisclosed order for 40 A321neos surfaced as United hedged its bets. It now has around 70 A321neos in service with another 135 on order, and the longer-range A321XLR - in "Born to Explore" livery - is expected to start domestic flying in late 2026 before going international in early 2027, taking over routes from the ageing 757s.
Boeing isn't going anywhere, though. United's two-year delivery plan into 2028 includes 119 more 737 MAX aircraft, so the neo will grow alongside the 737 family rather than replace it. For travellers, the practical takeaway is simple: if you're booking a domestic United flight and can pick your aircraft, the A321neo is the one that consistently gets the best passenger reviews - better screens, faster internet and easier snacks than much of the rest of the fleet. Check the equipment type when you book; on a three-hour transcontinental hop, those details matter more than an inch of seat pitch.
