London's biggest airport has never had a direct link to Thailand's beach capital — until now. Virgin Atlantic launched its Heathrow-to-Phuket service on October 30, 2025, filling a curious gap: despite heavy European demand for Thai winter sun, Heathrow had never offered a nonstop to the island.

The route runs three times a week from mid-October to late March, aimed squarely at the winter-sun crowd. The outbound flight leaves Heathrow at 3:45 PM and lands in Phuket at 9:55 AM the next day — a scheduled 12 hours 10 minutes in the air. Coming back, VS215 departs Phuket at 11:45 AM after a quick 110-minute turnaround and reaches London at 7:20 PM the same day, with a block time of 13 hours 40 minutes.

Virgin is flying 258-seat Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners on the route, its largest aircraft type with 17 in the fleet. The layout is roomy by long-haul standards: 31 Upper Class flatbeds in a 1-1-1 configuration, 35 premium economy recliners in 2-3-2, and 192 economy seats at 3-3-3, of which 36 'Economy Delight' seats come with extra legroom. Worth noting if you're booking future trips: Virgin plans to reconfigure its 787 fleet, boosting premium capacity substantially to 44 Upper Class suites and 56 premium economy seats while cutting economy to just 127.

Phuket is already well served from Europe in winter. December alone sees 379 European departures, with Air France from Paris, Finnair from Helsinki, SAS from Copenhagen, Turkish Airlines from Istanbul, and Aeroflot from Moscow and St Petersburg. Leisure carriers pile in too: TUI flies from five Nordic cities plus Gatwick and Manchester, Condor serves Frankfurt, and Norse Atlantic links Oslo.

For travellers, the practical upshot is more choice and competition. If you're based near London and want Thailand's beaches without a stopover or a trek to another airport, this is the first time you can do it direct from Heathrow — with Virgin's signature service and a proper flatbed if you're splashing out. Timing matters too: the schedule is winter-only, so it's a seasonal product rather than year-round. And with Phuket's broader European capacity so deep, fares across carriers may become more competitive as the season progresses.
