If you've ever finished an Airbnb stay by mopping floors, stripping beds and hauling bin bags to the kerb, help has arrived. Airbnb has quietly rolled out new ground rules for hosts, spelling out which checkout tasks guests can reasonably be asked to do - and which ones are now off the table.

Under the new policy, hosts can no longer demand you wash and put away dishes (stacking them in the sink is fine), strip sheets or start a laundry load (gathering used towels is acceptable), or take rubbish off-site (sorting recycling into indoor bins is the limit). Guests also can't be told to avoid using listed amenities like air conditioning - only to switch them off on the way out. Airbnb says all requests must be 'reasonable' under the new rules, and warns hosts that asking guests to do jobs a cleaner should handle can hurt their ratings. For anyone who's booked a holiday rental and dreaded the novel-length house manual, this is a genuinely welcome shift.

It was a busy week elsewhere in the hotel world too. Hilton Honors members can now settle their checkout bill with points directly in the app - a perk starting at around 150 properties, with roughly 6,000 hotels expected to offer it by next year. Hilton also rolled out new tools for its business programme, letting small and medium-sized companies book, modify and cancel staff stays from a single dashboard and track who's currently checked in for duty-of-care purposes.

Marriott's Luxury Collection is moving beyond the hotel itself with a new series of expeditions: think exploring Kyoto with a local artist, touring Italy in classic cars, or a beach fishing outing in Turks & Caicos. It's an interesting sign of where luxury travel is heading - less about the room, more about rare access.

Food-focused travellers have something from Kimpton too. The IHG brand launched 'The Curious Palate', a global dining programme spanning its hotels and restaurants, with quirky standouts like a daily 4 p.m. martini-and-unlimited-fries ritual at the Kimpton Fitzroy London and an off-menu Santa Barbara combo of banana milkshake, fries and bubbles at the Kimpton Canary.

Sustainable-lodging collection Beyond Green also expanded, adding El Silencio Lodge & Spa - a secluded cloud-forest retreat ringed by five protected wildlife areas in Costa Rica - and Hotel Món Sant Benet near Barcelona, which pairs a Michelin-starred restaurant with a medieval monastery setting.

The through-line for travellers: loyalty programmes are getting more flexible, hotels are selling experiences rather than just beds, and the era of unpaid housekeeping on holiday is fading. If your next trip involves either a rental or a big-brand hotel stay, it's worth a quick check of what's new before you book.
