A cheap room rate in Las Vegas can hide a lot: tired rooms, broken air conditioning, dodgy bathrooms. A recent rundown of Strip-area properties with weak review scores picked out five recognisable hotels that travellers might realistically book — and where the trade-offs are worth knowing in advance.

The methodology was sensible: start with Tripadvisor's rankings of 260 Vegas hotels, filter out shuttered motels, then focus on medium-to-large casino resorts rated 3.5 or lower, cross-checked against Google and Yelp categories like cleanliness, sleep and air conditioning.

OYO Hotel & Casino, near the south end of the Strip, scores 3.5 on Tripadvisor and 3.4 on Google, with a 69% unfavourable cleanliness rating and 93% unfavourable comments about accessibility — think dirty bathrooms, weak AC and elevators that are often out of action. It even made headlines after a guest booked what appeared to be a different hotel, "Palette Las Vegas," and found OYO instead. The flip side: it's across from the MGM Grand, rates are far below typical Strip prices, and staff get genuine praise.

The Rio, just west of the Strip, is a tale of two towers. The Masquerade Tower draws complaints about stained carpets, mould and worn furniture — plus 66% unfavourable Google reviews on sleep, thanks to one of the loudest casinos in town. But the Ipanema Tower has had more than 1,500 rooms renovated, and the property under new management since 2023 has added a revamped pool deck, a rooftop steakhouse and an Eggslut. Book an Ipanema room and confirm it in writing; some guests were placed in Masquerade anyway.

Circus Circus is Yelp's worst-rated hotel in the city at 2.1 stars, with 81% of Google reviews panning the bathrooms. Opened in 1968 at the north end of the Strip, it's showing its age — rooms described as motel-level, some without a microwave or fridge. Yet it remains one of the cheapest stays on the Strip, with free parking, free circus shows, water slides and a 76% positive score on family-friendliness.

The Flamingo, open since 1946, rates 3.4 on Tripadvisor with 82% unfavourable bathroom reviews and loud pool music that keeps pool-facing guests awake. In exchange you get arguably the best location in Vegas — 80% positive on location — steps from the Bellagio Fountains, the LINQ Promenade and the High Roller.

Finally, Arizona Charlie's Decatur, an off-Strip locals' casino about 15 minutes from the Strip, rates 2.9 on Tripadvisor thanks to smoke that reportedly seeps into non-smoking rooms and worn furnishings. Google reviewers are kinder (3.9 stars), citing friendly staff, free parking and low prices.

The takeaway isn't that these five are universally bad — several are mid-renovation and could improve quickly. It's that in Vegas, reading the most recent reviews and confirming your exact room or tower matters more than the headline price. Reputation can turn on a renovation, so check the hotel's own site for notices before you book.
