Kyrgyzstan has landed fifth place in a global ranking of the countries with the highest projected economic growth for 2026, a list based on International Monetary Fund forecasts. The news was flagged by Temir Sariev, the country's former prime minister and current president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who shared the ranking on social media.
The wider picture puts the ranking in context. The IMF expects the world economy to grow 3.1 percent next year, a figure it trimmed by 0.1 percentage point in October compared with its July projection. Against that modest global backdrop, the countries at the top of the list stand out sharply. Guyana leads with expected real GDP growth of 22.3 percent, fuelled almost entirely by its oil sector, while Taiwan sits second at 10.7 percent, helped by surging demand for technology and the ongoing artificial intelligence boom. South Sudan, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Vietnam and Uzbekistan also feature among the strong performers.
So why should a traveller care about a macroeconomic ranking? Because fast-growing Central Asian economies tend to be countries in motion: new hotels opening in Bishkek, improved roads to Lake Issyk-Kul, more flights, busier cafes and a general sense of a place on the up. Kyrgyzstan has been quietly building a name for itself among independent travellers for years — horse-trekking around Song-Kul lake, yurt stays in the Tian Shan mountains, alpine hiking in the Ala-Too range and one of the most relaxed visa regimes in the region for many nationalities. Neighbouring Uzbekistan also making the growth list only strengthens the case for a combined Central Asia trip, with the Silk Road cities of Samarkand and Bukhara a short hop away.
Growth does bring caveats. Rapid development can push prices up and change the character of places quickly, which is part of the argument for visiting sooner rather than later. Kyrgyzstan remains one of the most affordable destinations in Asia for now, with guesthouse and homestay travel still the norm outside the capital. For anyone who likes their destinations a little under the radar, this is a good moment to put it on the list.
