Christmas in the Maldives is looking distinctly colourful this year. The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands has lined up a festive programme built around a French artist residency, while Le Méridien Maldives is staging its own French-flavoured celebration on Thilamaafushi — proof that a white Christmas means something very different when it's 30°C and the sand is the white stuff.

At the Ritz-Carlton, the season is titled A Canvas of Festive Wonder and centres on Alexandre Benjamin Navet, a French artist known for vivid, playful work. He'll be in residence from 18 to 23 December 2026, working in collaboration with Champagne house Maison Ruinart. His influence shows up everywhere: a designer Christmas tree, bespoke ornaments, a gift collection, and a full artistic makeover of the Beach Shack restaurant. The installations stay up until April 2027, so you don't have to travel over the holidays to see them. Guests can also book studio visits and workshops with the artist, plus Ruinart tastings and two exclusive dinners.

The calendar is packed. The Christmas tree lighting lands on 22 December with a cocktail and the Ruinart Artist Dinner; Christmas Eve brings a gala at EAU Bar; Santa arrives over the resort's pool on Christmas Day followed by a concert; the Ritz Kids Fashion Show takes over on Boxing Day; and a beachfront New Year's Eve gala closes out 2026. Things keep rolling into January with an Orthodox Christmas gala on 6 January, a wine-paired dinner at IWAU Chef's Table on 3 January, and an Italian-themed Gaja Wine Dinner on 9 January. Kids get crafts and workshops, while the resort's naturalists run coral planting and reef exploration sessions.

Over in Lhaviyani Atoll, Le Méridien Maldives runs The White Isle from 20 December 2026 to 10 January 2027, its own take on European festive traditions with a French twist. The programme opens with a tree lighting and gingerbread house on 21 December, includes a Christmas Eve feast at Turquoise (included for Half-Board, Full Board and All-Inclusive guests), and Santa arriving across the lagoon on Christmas Day. Younger guests get a Marine Conservation Hub, treasure hunts, kids' night camping with stargazing, and telescope sessions with a resident astronomer.

New Year's Eve is the highlight: Midnight in White, an all-white beach soirée with live cooking stations, barbecues, cocktails and a DJ running into the early hours. On 6 January, guest chef Dmitry Parikov hosts a Rozhdestvo Khristovo dinner marking Orthodox Christmas. The resort has 134 beach and overwater villas, including two- and three-bedroom options for families, plus an early bird offer bundling all-inclusive dining with USD 100 in daily resort credit.

For travellers, this is a useful snapshot of how seriously Maldives resorts now treat the festive window — it's no longer just overwater villas and quiet sunsets, but full event calendars aimed at families and couples alike. If you want the art-and-Champagne angle, pick the Ritz-Carlton; if you're after a family-heavy, all-inclusive-friendly beach party, Le Méridien makes a strong case. Either way, book early: festive season dates in the Maldives sell out well in advance.
