A wave of athlete-led sports programming is hitting Maldives resorts this November and December, giving families and active travellers a reason to time their island break around more than just the weather.

The headline act: Avani+ Fares Maldives in Baa Atoll will run an Exclusive Kids' Football Camp from 15 to 18 November 2026, coached by former Liverpool defender Martin Kelly. Open to children aged five to 13 of any ability, the four-day programme includes daily afternoon training, a meet-and-greet, beach games, pool parties and FIFA tournaments, and wraps up with medals, certificates and an official kit (two jerseys, shorts and socks). Participation costs USD 399 per child, and a five-night package starts from USD 3,784 for two adults and one child in a Premium Ocean View Room — covering half-board, camp entry for one child and seaplane transfers. It follows three camps the resort has already hosted with Michael Owen, and comes in a year it was named Best Family Resort at the Travel Trade Maldives Awards.

Padel is arriving in force too. CROSSROADS Maldives, near Malé, stages the country's first FIP Silver Women's Padel tournament at SAii Lagoon Maldives from 5 to 8 November 2026, with 26 international pros including world No. 24 Nuria Rodriguez and world No. 36 Marta Talavan of Spain. Spectator entry is free and open to everyone, and holidaymakers can join masterclasses at USD 450 a day (USD 1,200 for four days, including a dinner with the players) or book private coaching with Finland's Martina Minetti and the UK's Rosie Pooley on 2–4 November at USD 200 per hour.

Badminton fans get their moment at W Maldives in North Ari Atoll, where two-time Olympic men's doubles champion Wang Chi-Lin — gold at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 — hosts a complimentary one-hour coaching session for guests between 1 and 3 December 2026. Marriott Bonvoy members can also bid through Marriott Bonvoy Moments (until 14 November 2026) for a private session paired with a four-night overwater villa stay, sunset drinks on the private island of Gaathafushi, spa treatments and snorkelling on the resort's house reef.

And if you just fancy a casual rally, Kandooma Maldives has added a pickleball court, open daily 6am to 6pm. Paddles and balls are free to borrow, and each villa gets one complimentary hour of court time per day.

Why it matters: the Maldives has long been sold on overwater villas and house reefs, but these resorts are clearly courting families and sporty travellers who want structure to their days. If you're travelling with football-mad kids, the Avani+ Fares camp offers rare access to a Premier League winner in a small-group setting; padel and badminton fans can meet world-class athletes without tournament-ticket prices. Book early — camp places, coaching slots and masterclass spots are limited, and November's shoulder season often brings better rates than peak winter.
