The Yellowstone spin-off Marshals follows Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, as he trades ranch life for an elite U.S. Marshals unit. The drama is set in Montana, but fans hoping to walk in his footsteps should point their GPS at Utah instead — most of the season was shot there, often just a short drive from Salt Lake City.

The most talked-about location is the Bullet in Barrel, Kayce's bar in the series. In real life it's the Boneyard Saloon, a bar and grill in the Yard complex in Park City, near the old Ontario Mine area. It has the same gastro-pub feel in person as it does on screen, with live music popping up regularly, so you can literally drink where the show is set while pretending you're in Montana.

Park City itself doubles as a backdrop beyond the bar. The Ontario Mine, established in 1872 after prospectors struck rich silver ore, was one of the town's most productive operations, pulling out millions in silver, lead and gold until the 1970s and fuelling Park City's boom. It's a fitting location for a show about the state's rugged past meeting its present.

Further afield, the Porter & Co. Haberdashery scenes were shot in Morgan Mercantile, a gift shop in Morgan, a small Mormon-settled town from the 1850s that sits along the Weber River about 40 miles northeast of Salt Lake City. Several other scenes were filmed around Morgan too. Episode four, 'The Gathering Storm', uses an establishing shot of Bozeman — one of the few genuine Montana appearances, also familiar from Yellowstone. Back in Utah, a Phillips 66 station near Coalville pops up on screen, and Coalville's Main Street stood in for town scenes in episode twelve, 'The Devil at Home'. The season finale, 'Wolves at the Door', features Mac's Motel, a real roadside inn in Heber City that fans can actually book a night in.

For travellers, this is a neat excuse for a road trip: Park City, Morgan, Coalville and Heber City are all clustered within about an hour's drive of Salt Lake City, easily doable in a day or two. You get a lively après-ski town, quiet river valleys and small-town Americana, plus the bragging rights of having found the show's 'Montana' before anyone tells you it's Utah. Yellowstone fans already make similar pilgrimages, and Marshals looks set to add a fresh set of pin-drops to the map — with more locations likely to surface as the season airs.
