Glacier National Park in Montana is famous for Going-to-the-Sun Road, golden larches in autumn and some seriously dark night skies — and where you base yourself makes a huge difference. The park splits naturally into two gateway areas: East Glacier, near the St. Mary Entrance, and West Glacier, near the West Entrance. They sit about 56 miles apart, so pick one or plan to sample both.
July is peak season for good reason — the road is fully open, high trails are snow-free and the weather is at its steadiest. That also means peak crowds. Autumn quiets things down and adds golden larch colour to the mix, while December through February offer near-solitude if you can handle cold weather and less accessible trails.
On the east side, near St. Mary and Babb, options span a new two-bedroom build on nine acres just ten minutes from the entrance (with mountain views, a fire pit and Starlink internet), and a three-bedroom log-style chalet sleeping eight that comes with a view-facing hot tub, a telescope for the Dark Sky zone and regular wildlife sightings. Couples might prefer the Glacier Eco-Cabin, a one-bedroom tiny-home-style build five minutes from the gate, while budget travellers should look at Glacier Lookout — set on 180 private acres with walking trails and panoramic views, it's one of the cheapest beds in the area.
West Glacier has its own strengths. Lake lovers get a 1960s-built three-bedroom A-frame on spring-fed Lake Five, complete with dock, kayaks and paddleboards — and because the lake isn't glacier-fed, the water isn't ice-cold. The West Glacier Adobe House sits directly across the street from the park boundary, with a wraparound porch, adobe fireplace and claw-foot tub. For serious outdoor living, a two-bedroom cabin comes with a barrel sauna, covered hot tub, grill and fire pit spread across a forested plot. Families of four are covered by a simple cabin under two miles from the entrance that includes 20% off a local rental store and a bunk-bed second bedroom, and larger groups can take the three-bedroom Going to the Sun Chalet on ten private acres with a huge wraparound deck.
Worth knowing: rentals near Glacier are limited, so they book up fast and get pricey in summer — book months ahead for July, or hunt for better value in the shoulder seasons. East side stays put you closer to Many Glacier and St. Mary trails; the west side suits Apgar, Lake McDonald and Logan Pass access.
