Portimão's Quinta Pedagógica — the Algarve city's municipal educational farm — throws open its gates again on Saturday, October 24, after roughly twelve months of improvement works. It's good news for families visiting or living in the western Algarve who want a free, easy day out that involves actual animals rather than another water park.

The closure allowed the council to tackle some unglamorous but important jobs: the plumbing was replaced entirely, the electrical network renewed, and drainage improved in the animal enclosures. The animals themselves get the best of it — automatic drinking systems in their boxes, new shelters against sun and rain, expanded enclosures (the goats in particular now have noticeably more room), plus new fencing, doors and security locks throughout. There's also fresh infrastructure on site, including a straw store, a wooden house for the rabbits and guinea pigs, and an extra storage building.

Why did it take a whole year? The council points to factors beyond its control: the company running the project went through an administrative restructuring, which triggered extra public procurement procedures, and the harsh winter of 2025 forced work to pause for safety reasons.

Interestingly, the farm never fully went dark. While general visitors were shut out, local schools kept coming for controlled educational sessions, so children in the area kept their contact with rural life and environmental learning throughout the works.

And there's more to come. A second phase is already planned, bringing a new children's playground, a full renovation of the lake and modernised chicken coops. So if you visit this autumn, expect a few more changes on your next trip.

Reopening day gets a proper celebration. At 11am, storyteller Maria Cachucha runs the free Corre, Corre Cabacinha workshop for ages three to six — a mix of storytelling, singing and play based on the traditional tale of an elderly woman who escapes inside a gourd on the way to her granddaughter's wedding. Kids also learn about gourds and their uses. It's free, but you need to register in advance, Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm, by calling 282 248 595 or emailing the farm.

Once reopened, the Quinta Pedagógica operates Monday to Saturday, 9.30am to 5.30pm, closing Sundays and public holidays — worth remembering if you're planning a weekend in Portimão.

For travellers, this slots neatly into the Algarve's off-beach roster. Portimão is best known for Praia da Rocha and sardine grills, but a morning at the farm paired with a stroll along the Arade river or the old town makes for a well-rounded, low-cost day — especially with small children in tow and the autumn crowds gone.
