An 88-year-old San Pedrana has been recognised at national level for a lifetime spent quietly holding her island community together. Maria Angela Varela received Belize's Meritorious Service Award at the Tribute to Belizean Patriots ceremony on September 17, held at the foot of the historic Swing Bridge in Belize City as part of the country's 45th Independence anniversary celebrations.
Varela's story is woven into the fabric of Ambergris Caye itself. She was a founding committee member behind the drive to build San Pedro's Catholic Church and served as its Treasurer for more than three decades. Through her family's cargo and ferry business, she helped move goods, residents and even visiting musicians between the island and the mainland back when that connection was far less routine than it is today.
Her contributions stretch well beyond the church. She hosted visiting priests, nuns and community groups in her home, threw herself into school fundraisers that supported local classrooms, and joined community clean-ups across town. Her granddaughter, Zelly Varela, summed up the family's view: her grandmother never sought the spotlight or considered herself a leader, simply treating people with kindness and giving without expecting anything back.
Prime Minister John Briceño and Governor General Dame Froyla Tzalam congratulated this year's recipients at the ceremony, which honours distinguished Belizeans each September. Varela joins a proud line of San Pedro recipients, including Omar "Dr. of the Flats" Arceo in 2024, Susana Eiley and the late former mayor Alberto "Beto" Nuñez Sr. in 2022, Pedro Salazar Sr. in 2017, and Rosita Baltazar in 2015.
For travellers, the story is a nice reminder that San Pedro is more than a pretty beach stop. The town's warm, close-knit character that visitors often comment on was built by people like Varela — islanders who ferried supplies, funded classrooms and kept community life running long before tourism took off.
