Astana International Airport has shared its 2026 passenger data, and the picture is clear: Kazakhstan's own big cities still dominate departures, while a handful of international hubs and a few surprises are picking up serious traffic.
Almaty, Shymkent and Atyrau top the list of busiest routes. Almaty is the obvious draw — Kazakhstan's largest city and commercial heart sits under two hours away, and the domestic corridor between the two is one of the region's workhorse routes. Shymkent in the south and Atyrau on the Caspian round out the trio, showing how much business and family travel moves between Kazakhstan's economic centres. Pavlodar, in the northeast, is also seeing a noticeable bump in demand, a small but telling sign that more travellers are choosing to fly routes they might once have done by road or train.
On the international side, the familiar names hold firm. Istanbul, Moscow and Beijing remain the most popular foreign destinations from Astana, pulling a mix of tourists, business travellers and passengers using them as connecting hubs. That makes sense: Istanbul's airport is one of the world's great transfer points, Moscow serves strong historical and commercial ties, and Beijing is a natural gateway for anyone heading into China.
The more interesting story is what's growing. Flights to Ulaanbaatar, Prague and Guangzhou are all gaining passengers, suggesting Kazakh travellers are spreading their wings beyond the usual three. Ulaanbaatar opens up Mongolia for an unusual short-haul adventure; Prague gives Central Europe a direct link from Central Asia; and Guangzhou adds another major Chinese entry point alongside Beijing.
Overall, Astana International now serves 65 destinations — 47 international and 18 domestic. For anyone using the Kazakh capital as a base, that's a genuinely useful network: you can reach most of the country by air, and from there connect to Europe, Russia, Turkey, China and Mongolia without a detour.
For travellers, the takeaway is practical. Domestic fares between the big cities are served by frequent flights, so hopping Almaty–Astana or heading south to Shymkent is easy to bolt onto a wider Kazakhstan trip. If you're planning an international leg, the established routes to Istanbul, Moscow and Beijing offer the most schedule flexibility, while the newer connections to Prague, Guangzhou and Ulaanbaatar are worth checking for competitive fares and less crowded cabins. As the route map expands, Astana is quietly turning into a more credible hub in its own right — not just a capital you pass through.
