Dental care has quietly joined the list of reasons Singaporeans hop over to Johor Bahru, alongside mall runs, massages and grocery hauls. With prices at home running steep and wait times long, a growing number of visitors are booking fillings, cleanings and even root canals on the Malaysian side of the border — often for a fraction of what they'd pay back home.

The savings are real. A scaling and polishing session at several JB clinics starts from around RM100 (roughly S$31), while the same treatment in Singapore typically runs S$60 to S$220. Teeth whitening tells an even starker story: SmiLings Dental Clinic offers a package from RM500 (about S$156), covering a consultation, cleaning and one whitening cycle, against S$650 to S$1,500 for comparable treatment in Singapore. Root canals start from around RM400 per canal at TAG Dental, versus S$400 to S$1,500 at home.

A few clinics stand out. JDT Dental, an eight-minute drive from the border near Plaza Pelangi, has over 2,000 Google reviews at 4.9 stars and offers 18 services. Next door, Ten Dental Clinic holds a perfect 5-star rating from more than 1,300 reviews and can turn retainers around the same day. Koh Dental Clinic, five minutes from KSL Mall, gets plaudits for gentle, well-explained whitening — handy for nervous or sensitive patients.

For bigger jobs, IDEA Dental near Mount Austin offers implants using Korea's Osstem and Switzerland's Straumann systems. E&E Dental Clinic is JB's first Invisalign Diamond Provider, handling over 400 cases a year, with treatment from RM11,000 (about S$3,429) — still well below the S$5,000 to S$6,000 starting point at many Singapore orthodontic practices. Braces generally start from RM1,500 at TAG Dental up to around RM8,500 for complex clear-aligner cases, versus considerably more in Singapore.

Late-night trippers take note: TAG Dental in Mount Austin is open 24 hours, seven days a week, and offers laughing gas sedation for anxious patients. It's about a 21-minute drive from the checkpoint, so it suits those who've timed their trip around JB's nightlife rather than an early appointment.

Worth remembering: braces and aligners need regular adjustment visits, so factor multiple Causeway crossings into the maths. Whichever clinic you pick, book ahead — the popular ones fill up, and an appointment in hand makes the border run far smoother.

For anyone already heading to JB for shopping or food, tacking a dental appointment onto the itinerary is an easy win: clinic-grade treatment at supermarket prices, with a mall or a plate of nasi kandar thrown in on the same trip.
