Praia da Rocha will once again become the centre of the afrobeats world next summer. Afro Nation, the festival that calls itself the planet's biggest celebration of afrobeats, amapiano and African music culture, runs June 9 to 11, 2027 on the Algarve beachfront — about a month earlier than its usual slot in recent years.
The first wave of names is strong. Davido, Rema and Congolese star Fally Ipupa top the bill on the main Lit Stage, and all three are Afro Nation veterans rather than newcomers to Portimão. They'll be joined there by Omah Lay, Odeal, Shenseea, Valiant, Victony, Rayvanny and others. Thirty artists are confirmed so far across the festival's stages.
The amapiano side of things sits with the Piano People stage, which pulls in a serious South African lineup: Kabza De Small, Young Stunna, TxC, Dlala Thukzin, 2woBunnies, Zee Nxumalo and more. Meanwhile the Afrotronic stage leans into house and electronic sounds, with Caiiro, Djeff, Jamiie, Aniko and JNR SA among those confirmed.
Afro Nation first landed in Portimão in 2019 and has grown into one of the Algarve's largest international events. Organisers say it draws an average of over 40,000 festivalgoers from more than 180 countries each year — a serious boost for the Praia da Rocha area and Portimão's hotels, bars and restaurants in early summer.
If you're thinking of going, note that the festival is strictly 18-plus and you'll need valid ID at the gate. Registrations for priority ticket access are already open on the event's website, which is worth doing before the general sale given how quickly past editions have moved.
For travellers, this is a rare combination: a top-tier music festival on a proper beach town. Praia da Rocha has a long sandy beach, a boardwalk lined with bars, and Portimão's seafood restaurants a short walk away. June in the Algarve means warm, dry weather and sea temperatures that are starting to become swimmable, so it's easy to build a proper holiday around the three festival days — Lisbon is a couple of hours away by road or rail if you want a city stop first.
