Disney is finally bringing the cruise experience to Japan. The company has unveiled Disney Imagination, a new ship that will depart from Tokyo on her maiden season in spring 2029 — the first Disney cruise ship dedicated to sailing around Japan rather than the Caribbean or Europe.

The vessel will be run by Disney Cruise Line Japan, a new cruise business operated by Oriental Land Co, the same company that runs Tokyo Disney Resort under licence from Disney. In other words, the team that already knows the Japanese Disney market inside out will be steering this one too.

Disney Imagination will join the Wish class — the same family of ships as Disney Wish, Disney Treasure, Disney Destiny and the upcoming Disney Believe. As with the rest of the fleet, expect characters and stories woven throughout: Ariel from The Little Mermaid will adorn the stern, and Disney has promised themed bars, immersive dining and onboard entertainment, with more details still to come.

She won't be Disney's first Asian venture, though. That honour went to Disney Adventure, which launched this year with sailings from Singapore and standout features including an Iron Man-themed rollercoaster and a three-deck storybook castle in its Imagination Garden. Japan is the second pillar of Disney's Asia expansion, and Natacha Rafalski, president of Disney Signature Experiences, framed the announcement as a milestone in the company's long relationship with Oriental Land Group — and a chance for Japanese guests to experience a Disney holiday at sea closer to home.

The announcement landed in the same week as news about Disney Believe, launching from Florida in 2027, where the maiden December sailing is already sold out. That ship will carry Tinkerbell on the bow, Buzz Lightyear and Woody on the stern, a Zootopia family show starring Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, a Frozen-themed family feast called Oaken's Table, an Encanto theatre show, plus a Little Mermaid piano bar (Sea Notes) and a Snow White lounge (the Wishing Well). It gives a decent preview of the level of detail and theming Disney Imagination will likely match.

Why should travellers care? Japan has a huge Disney fanbase but, until now, anyone wanting a Disney cruise from Asia had to fly to Singapore. From 2029, a Tokyo homeport opens up sailings that can be combined with a city break in Japan — no small deal given how popular Tokyo Disney Resort already is with domestic and international visitors. Expect demand from Japanese families to be intense, so early booking will matter if the Florida ship's instant sell-out is any guide. Keep an eye out for itinerary announcements: sailing from Tokyo Bay puts ports like Osaka, Kochi and Nagasaki within plausible reach, though Disney hasn't confirmed routes yet.

For Disney devotees and cruise-curious travellers alike, this is the first genuine opportunity to pair a Disney sailing with a Japan trip — and two years is not as long as it sounds when it comes to securing a cabin.
