Kuda Villingili Resort Maldives has made it into the MICHELIN Guide's 2026 hotel selection, a notable result for an independently owned Maldivian property going up against the big chains. The Guide judges hotels on five things: connection to the destination, architecture and design, consistency of service, authenticity and character, and value for money.

The resort sits in North Malé Atoll, about 30 minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport, which keeps transfers simple and affordable compared to seaplane-only islands. It has 75 villas, 36 of them overwater, and every single one comes with a private pool. There are eight dining options, an overwater spa, a 150-metre pool — one of the longest in the country — and, unusually for a luxury resort, direct access to Chickens Break, one of the Maldives' best-known surf spots. Green Globe certification for a third straight year rounds out the sustainability picture.

Kuda Villingili isn't alone in chasing food-led headlines. Late 2026 is shaping up as a busy season for visiting chefs across the atolls. Belgian chef Wout Bru, whose Le Grand Verre picked up its first Michelin star in 2023, hosts two one-night-only dinners in early November 2026: a four-course wine-paired dinner at Meyyafushi's Bubble Underwater Restaurant on 2 November (USD 450 net per person) and a five-course Michelin dinner at Raakani Restaurant on sister resort Fushifaru on 5 November (USD 300++ per person). Both are open to outside visitors, not just in-house guests, subject to reservations.

At Milaidhoo in Baa Atoll — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — chef James Knight-Paccheco, a veteran of Michelin-starred kitchens who has cooked alongside Raymond Blanc and Gordon Ramsay, runs a hands-on culinary workshop on 11 December 2026 followed by a wine-pairing dinner on 12 December.

The St. Regis Vommuli in Dhaalu Atoll brings back German two-star chef Alexander Herrmann from 19 to 23 November 2026, with six-course dinners in the Decanter wine cellar and at The Whale Bar, plus a masterclass at ALBA. It's part of the resort's 10th anniversary programme, and Marriott Bonvoy members can bid on a four-night overwater villa package through Marriott Bonvoy Moments until 22 October 2026.

Why it matters: if a food-forward Maldives trip is on your radar, 2026 is unusually well stocked. Guests at nearby resorts and islands can buy into several of these dinners without changing hotels, which is rare for high-end island dining. And Kuda Villingili's MICHELIN recognition is a useful shorthand for travellers who want independently owned character, surf access and family-friendly villas in one package, rather than the default big-brand private island.
