Melbourne Airport is in the middle of a $17 billion overhaul, and some of it already affects your trip. The changes to know right now: pick-up and drop-off have moved, the new road layout is saving drivers serious time, and a string of bigger projects — terminal expansion, a third runway, airport rail — is slowly taking shape.
**New pick-up and drop-off rules are live**
Since 6 October, anyone flying Qantas domestic, Virgin Australia or an international airline uses the new T123 Transport Hub. Drop-offs are on Level 3 (free, one-minute limit) and private vehicle pick-ups are on Level 2 (free, five minutes). Jetstar and Rex passengers keep using the T4 Hub as before. One easy-to-miss detail: taxis and rideshare collections still happen at the ground-level terminal forecourt — only private cars go to Level 2. If friends or family are collecting you, tell them to wait in the free zone on Mercer Drive for up to 60 minutes instead of circling the forecourt.
The airport says the new $500 million road network, accessed via Exit 19 (Naarm Way) off the Tullamarine Freeway, has cut average peak-hour travel times by ten minutes between Mickleham Road and the drop-off zone.
**A bigger international terminal**
Fresh designs show a $4.5 billion expansion of the international terminal extending into the old forecourt space. Expect larger check-in halls, expanded baggage claim, higher ceilings, more natural light, upgraded lounges and retail — plus five extra international gates. That gate capacity matters for travellers: it gives airlines room to add routes and larger aircraft. There's no firm completion date yet, with construction staged around the airport's 24-hour operation.
**More flights to Bali — and a runway in 2031**
Competition is already heating up. TransNusa launched Melbourne–Denpasar flights on 20 October as the sixth airline on the route, starting with four weekly flights and going daily from 16 November. Melbourne–Bali now averages eight flights a day each direction and has grown over 35% since 2019. TransNusa also sells onward connections to Lombok, Manado and Wakatobi if you want to venture past Bali.
The third runway is slated for 2031 — a 3,000-metre strip parallel to the existing north-south runway, enabling simultaneous take-offs and landings and, in theory, fewer delays and more scheduling options.
**Airport rail: don't hold your breath**
A CPB Contractors–SMEC consortium has been named for the Sunshine Station superhub upgrade, a key piece of the airport rail project. But note the fine print: the 2031 milestone refers to trains reaching Keilor East, not the airport. The final link to a station at the terminals is still in planning with no confirmed date. Until then it's SkyBus, taxi, rideshare or private transfer.
All this comes as Melbourne posted its busiest September on record — 3.1 million passengers — even though quarter-on-quarter traffic dipped slightly. For anyone flying out of Tullamarine in the next year or two, the practical takeaway is simple: double-check your pick-up point before you travel, and make sure any private transfer operator has updated their meeting instructions.
