Tiny flats and a lifetime of belongings don't mix well, and Singaporeans have quietly built one of Asia's most competitive self-storage markets to solve the problem. A roundup from The Smart Local details 12 operators across the island, with prices starting from around $4 a month at the very low end and roughly $18-$98 a month for standard units — genuinely useful if you're heading overseas for a few months and don't want to pay rent on an empty room just to house your sofa.
The options fall into a few camps. Lock+Store has 16 outlets from Sembawang to Tanjong Pagar, with a current 50% discount on new air-con units at Ayer Rajah (air-con lockers from $68 at Tanjong Pagar), 24/7 PIN-code access, and free trolleys, ladders and parking. StorHub, the company that brought self-storage to Singapore and now runs 19 locations, rents units from an 11sqft locker to a 280sqft room on terms as short as a single month — handy if you're between homes or waiting on a relocation.
If you'd rather not lift a box, Spaceship is the country's largest valet storage operator: movers collect your things, wrap them, store them in units from 20sqft (from $72/month) up to 1,000sqft, and redeliver on request. It also runs shared micro-fulfilment centres for online sellers — a tidy setup for anyone running an e-commerce side hustle while travelling. Extra Space Asia, with over 100 facilities across Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea, offers climate-controlled units for wine and collectibles plus a door-to-door e-Valet service, with self-storage from $18 a month.
Budget hunters have options too: EZ Storage starts at $70 for a 20sqft space and $250 for a 100sqft room the size of an HDB bedroom, with free wrapping, disassembly and reassembly of furniture, and same-day pickup any day of the week. Storefriendly stands out for first-timers, with air-conditioned units, robot-retrieved lockers at Jurong East and Paya Lebar, and coworking hotdesks ($139/month) or private offices (from $615/month) at selected outlets. U-Store@SG tackles the mould problem with mechanical ventilation that fully refreshes the air in non-air-conditioned units.
Why should travellers care? Because long-term travel often stalls on logistics: what happens to the furniture, the bike, the boxes of documents? Monthly self-storage from under $20 — with no long lock-in — makes an extended stint abroad, a house move timed to a trip, or a nomadic year far less painful. Just note the ground rules: you can't live or work in the unit, and hazardous materials are off-limits everywhere.
