Cunard's flagship is about to get its biggest overhaul in years. Queen Mary 2 — the only true ocean liner still running a regular trans-Atlantic schedule between Southampton and New York — will enter dry dock on March 31, 2027, and return to service on May 9, 2027 after a five-week refresh.
The big-ticket change: 31 extra cabins, including 16 new Princess Grill Suites and 15 Britannia staterooms. Existing Grill Suites will be redone with new furnishings, finishes and spa-style bathrooms, and both the Queens Grill and Princess Grill restaurants get a facelift. Outdoor deck space is being expanded too.
Fans of the ship's quirks will be relieved to hear the kennels — the only dedicated kennels at sea, where passengers can bring their dogs on the crossing — are being upgraded rather than scrapped. The Mareel Wellness & Beauty spa will be revamped, a new set of luxury shops is coming aboard, and Illuminations, the largest planetarium on any ship, is due a full digital upgrade.
Design leadership goes to Chris Finch, one of the original designers of the ship, so the refit is framed as a refinement rather than a reinvention. Cunard says the Art Deco character stays intact, with classic Hollywood glamour balanced against the line's British heritage. Illustrator Tanu Vasu has been brought in to visualise the transformation.
Why it matters to travellers: anyone booked on a spring 2027 crossing should check their sailing date against the dry dock window, and anyone eyeing a Grill Suite should know that suites will be both more numerous and newly refurbished from May 2027. If you've always wanted to do the classic seven-day Southampton–New York run — five full sea days, no ports, proper dressing for dinner — the post-refit season is arguably the best time in years to do it. The added cabins also mean more availability in the premium tiers, which have historically sold out quickly.
