Uniworld Boutique River Cruises is about to have its biggest year ever. In 2027 the line adds three ships — the largest expansion in its history — and finishes converting its whole fleet to its premium "Super Ship" standard.
Two of the newcomers lean into old-Hollywood style. The Audrey and the Marlene, both sailing European rivers, take their design cues from Audrey Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich respectively, continuing Uniworld's approach of building each vessel as a distinct "floating boutique hotel" rather than a clone of its sisters. The third addition, the São Rafael, boosts the line's capacity on Portugal's Douro River, which CEO Ellen Bettridge calls one of Uniworld's strongest-performing destinations.
There's a wildcard too. Through a partnership with Aqua Expeditions, Uniworld will operate the Aqua Blu, a small expedition yacht, on just two highly exclusive 2027 sailings covering Indonesia and Singapore — a first for the brand, which has traditionally stuck to rivers.
The momentum doesn't stop there. In 2028 three more ships arrive: the Helen on the Danube, the Clara on the Rhine and the Mekong Mystique in Southeast Asia, taking the fleet to 22 vessels. Pair the two years together and Uniworld says it's one of the heaviest investment periods in its history.
New hardware comes with new ways to sail. Six fresh itineraries span Europe and Asia, and pre- and post-cruise land programmes are being added in Paris, Prague and Zurich — handy if you want to tack a city stay onto a sailing. The Women-Only Cruise, launched in 2025, returns in 2027, and themed departures around wine, golf, music and Jewish heritage keep growing.
Who's booking all this? Boomers still anchor the river cruise market, but Bettridge says Gen X is the growth story, and the line has responded with more active shore options — biking, hiking, cooking workshops and wine tastings alongside the usual walking tours. Family-focused "Generations Collection" sailings timed to school holidays are also picking up steam. North America, the UK and Australia remain the core source markets.
For travellers, the takeaway is simple: 2027 is a good year to look at river cruising, whether you want film-star interiors on the Rhine, terraced vineyards on the Douro, or a rare small-ship hop between Singapore and Indonesia. Book early for the debut season — new ships tend to sell their first sailings fast.
