Zagreb has picked up a notable accolade for the colder half of the year: Time Out has named the Croatian capital Europe's best winter destination for families in its roundup of European winter city breaks for 2026. That's a switch from the usual script — Croatia's reputation is built on Adriatic summers, but the ranking points to a capital that comes alive when temperatures drop.

The award rests heavily on Zagreb's Advent programme, which has won European Christmas market awards before and takes over the city centre from late November into early January. Expect a cluster of festive markets around the main square and Zrinjevac park, live music, street performers, and the kind of decorative lighting that gives the whole centre a warm glow. Families also get a dedicated events calendar, including the annual Advent Run, plus a winter cultural lineup of exhibitions, theatre and concerts that keeps indoor days interesting when the weather turns.

The wider Time Out list splits Europe's winter appeal into categories. Paris took the couples' prize, Edinburgh was picked for food lovers, and Ljubljana — just over the border, and an easy add-on to a Croatian trip — was named the most underrated winter destination, thanks in part to its strikingly designed Christmas light installations. Sarajevo earned a nod as a different kind of winter break, pairing cultural heritage and traditional coffee-house culture with ski slopes within easy reach.

The full selection covers 11 European cities, among them Amsterdam, Tallinn, Tromsø, Antwerp, Innsbruck and Reykjavik — a mix that runs from festive shopping to northern-lights territory.

For families weighing up a December or January escape, Zagreb's selling points are practical as much as pretty. The markets cluster within walking distance of one another, entry is free, and prices for food and accommodation sit well below those in Vienna, Prague or Munich, the region's heavier-hitting festive contenders. Kids are well catered for too, with dedicated children's zones, ice skating and occasional sledding setups depending on the snow. Add a side trip to the Upper Town's funicular and the Museum of Illusions, or a thermal bath stop, and you have a city break that fills several days without long transfers.

It's also a good moment to visit: Zagreb's Advent has grown into one of Europe's most decorated Christmas events since it launched in its modern form in 2014, and the extra recognition tends to draw crowds — so booking rooms near the centre early for the December peak is worth doing.
