Singapore Airlines has made it official: a personal concierge will now look after Suites and First Class passengers at Changi Airport from the moment they check in until they reach their aircraft door. The service, previously offered more informally, has been formalised as a permanent ground experience for the airline's most premium fares.

So what does that actually involve? Departing passengers get porter help with bags at the First Class check-in, an escort through immigration and to The Private Room, and a point of contact for flight updates, disruption rebooking or any special requests while they relax in the lounge. When available, a buggy takes them to the departure gate, where staff assist through security and walk them to the aircraft door. There's even a choice at the end: board early, or linger over another coffee and board last. The buggy ride is the one caveat — it's subject to availability, not guaranteed.

Regulars on the route will tell you much of this already existed. One writer who flew Suites from Singapore to London last November describes being watched over by a lounge attendant who greeted him by surname, then ferried by buggy to the gate, where the agent welcomed him as the final passenger and three crew escorted him to his suite. The new announcement essentially codifies and expands what was previously a somewhat ad hoc experience.

It's a smart move in the ongoing battle to justify first class fares. Business class cabins now offer excellent seats, decent food and comfortable lounges at a fraction of the price, so airlines need to make the premium feel obvious before boarding even starts. Having someone take responsibility for getting you to your flight — without hovering — means you can stop clock-watching and enjoy the lounge. That matters less if you know Changi well, but it's genuinely valuable if you're unfamiliar with the airport, tight on a connection, or just want the friction removed.

For anyone considering splashing out on Suites or First out of Singapore, this rounds out an already strong departure experience: dedicated check-in, The Private Room (arguably the best first class lounge in the world), and now a guaranteed hand-held path to your seat. Combined with Singapore's famously consistent onboard service, it's another reason the airline keeps topping first class rankings.
