Twenty-five minutes northwest of downtown Atlanta, the suburb of Smyrna has quietly built a reputation as one of Cobb County's best places to live — and it's becoming just as appealing for a day trip. Niche rates the tree-lined city an A-plus, citing its recreation, nightlife, schools and community feel, and it has a floral claim to fame too: fragrant yellow jonquils bloom here each spring, earning Smyrna the nickname "Jonquil City."
The heart of town is Smyrna Market Village, a walkable, landscaped town centre mixing shops, cafés, craft beer and townhomes around the green expanse of Village Green Park. From early May to mid-October, the Smyrna Handmade Market takes over in front of City Hall on summer and autumn Sundays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. More than 60 vendors, farmers and artisans set up stalls selling flowers, local produce, jams, stationery and handmade jewellery, with street food ranging from kebabs to empanadas.

Atkins Park Tavern — Atlanta's oldest continuously licensed tavern, sitting at 4.3 stars on Google — does Southern comfort food like Louisiana po' boys and Nashville hot chicken sliders, plus oysters that reviewers rave about. Zucca Bar and Pizzeria has baked stone-oven pies for more than two decades; expect a loud, packed room, garlicky knots and a clam and bacon pizza worth the noise.
Golf is the other big draw. Fox Creek Golf Club (par 61) and neighbouring Legacy Golf Links (par 58) have been singled out by Sports Illustrated among the best practice facilities in the country, and the Golf Range Association of America named them a top public driving range. Both courses have 50 hitting stations, Champion Bermuda greens framed by pines, and PGA instructors running lessons and clinics at the Golf Academy at Fox Creek. Legacy, designed by World Golf Hall of Famer Larry Nelson, is the shorter of the two but throws in bunkers and water hazards; tee times for both can be booked on a shared site. The outdoors doesn't stop at the fairways. Village Green Park hosts summer "Concerts on the Green" and the autumn Smyrna Blanket Concert Series, while the Silver Comet Trail — a 61.5-mile paved path following old railroad tracks all the way to the Georgia-Alabama state line — cuts straight through town for walkers, runners and cyclists. Time a spring visit right and you'll catch the annual Jonquil Festival.
