Zagreb's main airport has clocked up four million passengers in 2026 sooner in the calendar year than it ever has before, a milestone it announced on 26 October. That makes it one of the fastest-growing mid-sized airports in Europe right now, with traffic running roughly 40% above pre-pandemic 2019 levels — a gap few European airports can match.

The growth has come despite the headwinds every airline and airport is currently complaining about: higher operating costs, geopolitical disruption and limited capacity. Zagreb's response has been to keep broadening its route map with airline partners, and the standout addition is Air China's new direct service from Beijing — the first time Croatia has had that kind of link to China's capital, and a signal of how much the Croatian market has grown in appeal for Asian carriers as well as European ones.

One of Zagreb's quiet advantages is that it doesn't live or die by the summer. Unlike beach-led destinations where terminals empty out in November, the Croatian capital sees steady traffic all year thanks to a mix of business travel, tourism and people visiting family and relatives. That consistency is exactly what airlines want when deciding where to base routes, which in turn keeps connectivity reliable for travellers in the shoulder seasons.

More news is promised on the route front soon, and the airport says preparatory work on expanding the passenger terminal will begin in 2027 — a response to growth that's now straining the building opened only a few years ago.

For holidaymakers, the practical takeaway is simple: Zagreb is easier to reach than ever, and it's a gateway to more than just the capital. Direct flights, including the new Beijing route, feed into a country whose Adriatic coast, national parks and inland wine regions are all a few hours away. And because Zagreb's traffic is year-round, you're more likely to find good connections in winter and spring, when flights to the coastal airports thin out dramatically. If you've been putting off a Croatia trip outside peak July-August, the country's main hub is increasingly built for exactly that kind of trip.
