Portimão is throwing a free street party this autumn, and for its eighth outing the InDireita Street Fest is stretching beyond the shop-lined Rua Direita into Praça da República — the leafy square locals call Alameda. Mark October 3 and 4 in the diary.
Organised by the P.O.I.S! association, the festival doubles as a shop-local campaign. Over the weekend, businesses in the centre run a 'Stock Out' sale, flogging end-of-season goods at knockdown prices. It's all tied to Comércio do Centro Portimão, the brand behind the city's Digital Commercial District — a council-backed project funded by Portugal's Recovery and Resilience Plan to help traditional traders go digital and drag footfall back downtown.
The main action lands on Sunday October 4, when Rua Direita goes car-free and fills up with the works: concerts, street and circus performances, workshops, kids' games, live art, an artisan market and a food area. There's a green twist too — a collective planting session will put new greenery along the street, which organisers hope sticks around long after the crowds head home.
Music runs through the day, with Bruna Marino and Tabea on the bill, plus a main-stage lineup featuring MUD, Naomi Falcon and the Dub Collective, Tiago Saga and The Band Rehearsal, The Backpockets and Brazilian act MB2.
